Nicotine pouch vs chewing tobacco vs snus: the UK differences (2026)

📖 14 min read 27 June 2024 · Updated 20 October 2026
ZYN Medium Spearmint 11mg can of tobacco-free nicotine pouches on a kitchen table, for the nicotine pouch vs chewing tobacco guide

Short version: you chew chew, you don't chew a pouch. Chewing tobacco is cured leaf you work with your teeth and usually spit. A nicotine pouch is a white, tobacco-free pouch you park under your lip and leave alone. Snus is tobacco too, but you don't chew it.

Quick answer: A nicotine pouch gives you nicotine with no chewing, no spitting and no tobacco leaf. If you already use chew or dip, a mid-range pouch such as 11mg ZYN Medium Coffee is a sensible place to start comparing (see the full ZYN range).

Nicotine pouch vs chewing tobacco vs snus at a glance

This guide is for adults (18+) who already use nicotine. Nicotine is addictive in every one of these formats.

Nicotine pouch Chewing tobacco Snus
What it is A pre-portioned, tobacco-free pouch of plant fibre (cellulose), nicotine, flavourings, sweeteners, pH adjusters and (in many pouches) water "Cured tobacco in the form of loose leaf, plug, or twist" (FDA) Moist cut or ground tobacco, sold loose or in pouches
Contains tobacco leaf? No Yes Yes
How it's used Parked under the lip and left there Held between cheek and gum and chewed Held in the mouth, loose or pouched
Do you chew it? No Yes No
Spitting No spitting. Bin the used pouch Saliva is usually spat out (Mayo Clinic) Covered in our snus explainer (linked below)
Look, smell and taste White pouch, flavoured, no leaf Tobacco leaf, tastes of tobacco Tobacco, tastes of tobacco
Flavour range Mint, fruit, cola, coffee, tea and more Tobacco-based. Some US products are sweetened or flavoured Tobacco-based
How strength is labelled Mg per pouch on the can (some brands use mg per gram or dots) Not pre-portioned, so there's no mg-per-pouch figure Varies by product
UK sale status Tobacco-free nicotine pouches, which SnusBox sells to adults See the law section below Sale banned in the UK since 1992, as of October 2026 (Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992)

All three deliver nicotine the same way, through the tissues lining the mouth (Mayo Clinic). The real differences are what's in the product, whether you chew it and what it tastes like. For the snus side in more depth, read our explainer on Swedish snus vs UK nicotine pouches.

Chew, dip, snus, 'tobacco pouches': what people actually mean

These words get swapped around a lot, in shops and in searches. Below is our own glossary, based on what customers actually ask us. It's editorial observation, not survey data.

Term What it usually means Contains tobacco leaf?
Chew, chaw, spit tobacco Loose leaf, plug (compressed) or twist (braided) tobacco that's chewed (Mayo Clinic) Yes
Dip, moist snuff, a "pinch" Moist snuff placed between cheek and gum. The FDA puts it simply: "Dip is a common form of moist snuff." Yes
Chew bags A loose term people use for pouched tobacco and sometimes for nicotine pouches. Check the can for "tobacco-free" or a tobacco ingredient Depends on the product
Snus, "snooze", "snoose" Swedish-style moist tobacco, loose or pouched. "Snooze" and "snoose" are just common spellings people type Yes
"Tobacco pouches", "white snus", nicotine pouches In UK searches these usually mean tobacco-free nicotine pouches. The Swedish standards body describes nicotine pouches as "also known as white snus" No

The plain rule: if a product contains tobacco and goes under your lip without being chewed, SnusBox doesn't sell it. Everything we stock is a tobacco-free nicotine pouch.

What's inside each one

Start with the pouch. ZYN's UK ingredients page lists nicotine, flavourings (with food-grade sweeteners and no sugar), cellulose (a plant-derived fibre), pH adjusters, acesulfame K and water. On where the nicotine comes from, ZYN says: "The nicotine in ZYN is derived from tobacco but ZYN does not contain tobacco leaf."

pH adjusters matter more than their dull name suggests. According to Haypp, ingredients such as sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate "can be added" to raise the pH, and a higher pH makes more nicotine available. That's a general point about pouches, not a confirmed list of what's in any particular brand.

Chewing tobacco is the tobacco leaf itself. US local-government guidance from Macomb County says loose leaf is usually treated with sugar or liquorice, plug often has sweeteners and flavourings added, and twist is often flavoured. Those are US products, so formulations vary.

Snus is tobacco-based too, which is why it tastes of tobacco. The visible difference, then, is that pouches are white, contain no leaf and come in flavours, while chew and snus are tobacco and taste like it. We make no claims about teeth or oral health either way.

Using a pouch when you're used to chew or dip

Do you chew a nicotine pouch?

No. As ZYN puts it, "You simply place a pouch under your lip." Tuck it under your lip and leave it there. If you're coming from chew, the urge to work it with your teeth is a reflex you'll need to drop.

A tingling or slight burning feeling is commonly reported while the nicotine is absorbed (Haypp). Haypp describes it as generally normal, and it's nothing to chase. If your gum feels irritated, use a fresh spot next time. Don't swallow pouches, and stick to the manufacturer's guidance on the can.

When you're done, bin the used pouch. There's no need for a spit cup. ZYN cans have a compartment in the lid where you can keep used pouches until you find a bin.

Saliva and the spit habit

You don't need to spit. Just don't swallow the pouch itself. If saliva bothers you, try ZYN Mini: ZYN's ingredients page lists water for its regular pouches but not for Mini, so it's a drier pouch.

ZYN Mini is the small end of the ZYN range. The 6mg ZYN Mini Strong Cool Mint (£4.19) pairs that smaller pouch with a mint flavour, which suits chew users who like a minty dip.

Strength: picking a pouch if you already use chew or dip

This section is for people who already use nicotine. If you don't, none of this is a reason to start.

Chew and dip aren't pre-portioned, so there's no mg-per-pouch figure to match against. Pouches print strength per pouch on the can, though some brands use mg per gram or a dot system, and there's no common standard across the industry.

The number on the can is also only part of the story. How much nicotine you actually absorb depends on the nicotine content, pH, moisture, pouch format and you as a person (Haypp). Two pouches with the same mg can feel quite different.

As a reference point, the Swedish Institute for Standards' specification SIS/TS 72:2024 states, as quoted by Haypp: "The maximum total nicotine allowed per consumable shall be 20mg." It's a voluntary standard, not UK law, but it's a useful marker for where very strong pouches start.

Tier Examples we stock Who it suits
Low (1.5–6mg) ZYN X 1.5mg, ZYN Mini 3mg, 77 Light 5mg, Denssi 5.6mg, ZYN Strong and Mini Strong 6mg Lighter nicotine users
Mid (8–13.5mg) ZYN 9–13.5mg, 77 Medium 10mg, Pablo Silver 10.2mg, Cuba White 10.4mg, Killa 13.2mg, Greatest Cold Dry XL 13.3mg Most regular users, including many coming from chew or dip
Strong (14–19mg) Pablo Gold 17mg People already comfortable at the top of the mid range
20mg and over Pablo Exclusive 24–30mg, Iceberg 35mg, Cuba Black 43mg, Maggie Extreme 45mg Only experienced users already used to strong pouches

Our advice: start around 6mg ZYN Strong Spearmint (the top of the low tier) or in the mid range with 11mg ZYN Medium Spearmint or Killa at 13.2mg, then adjust gradually. Don't jump to 20mg or above unless you're already used to strong pouches. Use one pouch at a time and stay within the guidance on the can. For every mg from 1.5 to 45, see our nicotine pouch strength guide.

Killa Cold Mint (13.2mg, £3.79) is the top of that suggested starting range, and the most you'd want to try before you know how pouches sit with you.

Flavours and pouch sizes that feel familiar

First, the honest bit: we don't stock a tobacco-flavoured pouch or a wintergreen pouch. What we can do is point you to flavours that sit closest to the chew and dip tastes people tend to like.

Mini, standard and XL white nicotine pouches side by side, showing the different pouch sizes

Flavour matches for chew and dip fans

Mint and wintergreen fans should start with ZYN Cool Mint, which comes in 1.5mg, 3mg, 6mg, 9mg and 11mg versions, or Killa Cold Mint at 13.2mg (£3.79). If cherry chew is your thing, try Killa Dark Cherry 13.2mg (£3.79) or ZYN Black Cherry 11mg (£4.19). The rest of the range is on the Killa brand page.

For darker, earthier tastes, ZYN Coffee comes in 11mg and 6mg (£4.19). 77 also makes Black Tea and Green Tea at 10mg (£3.99 each). These are the nearest we get to a non-minty option for plain chew fans.

Featured Product

Cola is another familiar sweet-and-dark option. Choose between Cuba White Cola 10.4mg, 77 Cola Ice 10mg and Killa Cherry Cola 13.2mg, depending on the strength you've settled on.

Pouch size: mini, regular and XL

If you're used to a bulky pinch, a regular pouch can feel slight at first, and a bigger one may feel more familiar. Greatest Cold Dry XL (13.3mg, £3.99) is our XL option. At the small end, ZYN Mini comes in 3mg and 6mg if you prefer something less noticeable.

What UK law says about snus, chewing tobacco and pouches

Everything here is as of October 2026. The Tobacco and Vapes Act provisions below are stated for England and Wales; Scotland and Northern Ireland bring the rules in separately.

Selling tobacco for oral use (traditional snus) has been illegal in the UK since 1992 under the Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992. The Regulations define "tobacco for oral use" as:

"any product made wholly or partly of tobacco which is— (a) intended for oral use, unless it is intended to be smoked or chewed; and (b) is either— (i) in powder or particulate form or any combination of these forms, whether presented in sachet portions or porous sachets or in any other way, or (ii) presented in a form resembling a food product."

Note the words "unless it is intended to be smoked or chewed". Products intended to be chewed fall outside this definition, which is why the snus ban doesn't catch chewing tobacco. This only explains why the snus ban treats the two differently. It isn't a statement about chewing tobacco's wider legal status.

The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 29 April 2026. It re-enacts the ban on selling oral tobacco from 29 October 2026 (s.8). From the same date, it's an offence to sell a vaping or nicotine product, including nicotine pouches, to anyone under 18 in England and Wales (s.10).

SnusBox sells tobacco-free nicotine pouches, not tobacco snus, and customers confirm they're 18+ on the site. For the full picture, read our explainer: is snus legal in the UK?

Side effects and addiction

Nicotine is addictive whether it comes from chew, snus or a pouch, and changing format doesn't change that. If you use nicotine every day, expect to feel it when you go without.

Gum and mouth irritation is a reported pouch side effect. In a 2024 study by Mallock-Ohnesorg and colleagues, 15 adult smokers used 6mg, 20mg and 30mg pouches. All the pouches caused mouth irritation, and the 30mg pouches produced the strongest side effects. It's a small sample, but it backs up the basic advice to keep strength sensible.

If your gum gets sore, move the pouch to a different spot each time or drop a strength. Our guide to nicotine pouch side effects covers this in more detail.

What a can of pouches costs

Most mainstream cans we sell cost between £3.79 and £4.99. Pablo, Killa and Cuba are £3.79, while 77, Greatest and Denssi are £3.99. ZYN is £4.19, and Velo and Loop are £4.99.

Our multi-buy discount gives 10% off when you buy 10 or more cans, 15% off at 20 or more, 20% off at 30 or more, applied automatically in the basket. For a fuller breakdown by brand, see our guide to nicotine pouch prices in the UK.

FAQs

What is the difference between a nicotine pouch and chewing tobacco?

A nicotine pouch is a white, tobacco-free pouch of plant fibre, nicotine and flavourings that you park under your lip without chewing or spitting. Chewing tobacco is cured loose leaf, plug or twist tobacco that you chew, and the saliva is usually spat out. Both contain nicotine, which is addictive.

Do nicotine pouches contain tobacco?

There's no tobacco leaf in them. ZYN, for example, says its nicotine is derived from tobacco but the pouch contains no tobacco leaf. As of October 2026, the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 defines a "nicotine product" separately from tobacco products, vaping products and medicinal products (s.51).

Do you have to spit with nicotine pouches or snus?

Not with a nicotine pouch. You park it under your lip and bin it when you're done. If saliva bothers you, ZYN Mini is a drier option: ZYN lists water as an ingredient of its regular pouches but not Mini. Snus is a tobacco product we don't sell (our snus explainer covers how it's used), while chewing tobacco usually involves spitting.

Do you chew a nicotine pouch?

No. Unlike chew, a pouch sits under your lip and stays there. Haypp describes a tingle as generally normal, but if the spot gets sore, use a different spot next time. Don't swallow the pouch.

Is snus the same as chewing tobacco?

No. Both are tobacco, but snus is moist cut or ground tobacco held in the mouth, loose or in pouches, while chewing tobacco is leaf, plug or twist that's chewed. UK law treats them differently too: as of October 2026, the 1992 definition of tobacco for oral use excludes products intended to be chewed (Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992, reg 1).

Are tobacco pouches the same as nicotine pouches?

In everyday UK searches, "tobacco pouches" usually means tobacco-free nicotine pouches, which is what SnusBox sells. Pouches that actually contain tobacco for oral use are traditional snus. As of October 2026, selling those has been illegal in the UK since 1992 under the Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992, and the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 re-enacts that ban in England and Wales from 29 October 2026 (s.8).

What strength nicotine pouch should I use if I'm used to chewing tobacco or dip?

This is for existing nicotine users only. Chew isn't pre-portioned, so there's no direct mg match. Start around 6mg ZYN Strong (the top of the low tier) or in the mid range with 11mg ZYN Medium or 13.2mg Killa, adjust gradually, and avoid 20mg and above unless you're already used to strong pouches.

Do nicotine pouches stain your teeth?

Pouches are white and contain no tobacco leaf, while chew is tobacco leaf. We don't make claims about dental effects either way. If you have concerns, speak to your dentist.

What is the difference between ZYN and nicotine gum?

Nicotine gum is chewed, while a ZYN pouch is parked under the lip and left alone. ZYN pouches are consumer nicotine products that make no medicinal claims. SnusBox sells nicotine pouches and doesn't sell nicotine gum.

Is snus legal in the UK?

As of October 2026, selling traditional tobacco snus has been illegal in the UK since 1992 under the Tobacco for Oral Use (Safety) Regulations 1992, and the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 re-enacts that ban in England and Wales from 29 October 2026 (s.8). SnusBox sells tobacco-free nicotine pouches only. For more, read is snus legal in the UK?

How much nicotine is in a nicotine pouch?

It's printed in mg per pouch on the can, and our range runs from 1.5mg (ZYN X) to 45mg (Maggie Extreme). What you absorb depends on pH, moisture and format, not just the number on the can. The Swedish Institute for Standards' voluntary specification sets 20mg per pouch as a maximum, as quoted by Haypp.

What are the side effects of nicotine pouches?

Nicotine is addictive. Gum and mouth irritation are reported side effects, and in a 2024 study the 30mg pouches produced the strongest side effects, which is one reason to avoid 20mg and above unless you're already used to strong pouches. If your gum gets sore, rotate where you place the pouch or drop a strength.

For adult nicotine users only (18+). Contains nicotine, which is an addictive substance.
